Reading and spelling supports
Ceist Eile can be set up for the way you read and write. Each of these is a setting on the You tab, off until you turn it on, and you can change it any time.
Built for the way you read
Dyslexic, ADHD, or just tired at the end of the day: switch these on and watch the question change. They're all in the app, off until you want them, and none of them costs marks.
Aerobic respiration releases energy from glucose in two stages. Stage 1 takes place in the cytoplasm and does not need oxygen. Stage 2 needs oxygen, releases most of the energy, and takes place inside one particular organelle.
(a) Name the organelle where stage 2 takes place. (3 marks)
Spelling doesn’t count
If spelling is hard for you, turn this on. When you type an answer, a close misspelling of the right word is marked right, and you’re shown the correct spelling so you still learn it.
- It matches the spelling and grammar waiver. Under the State Examinations Commission’s RACE scheme (Reasonable Accommodations at the Certificate Examinations), some students with a specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia are not penalised for spelling, grammar and punctuation in English, Irish and other language exams. If you have the waiver, or are applying for it, you can practise the same way.
- You don’t need the waiver to use it. It helps anyone who knows the answer but loses marks to spelling.
- What stays exact. Numbers, symbols, formulas and short answers such as a genotype or a chemical symbol are still marked exactly, because one character changes the meaning. A slip in a longer word is forgiven; a different word isn’t, so meiosis won’t pass for mitosis.
Easier to read
- Paper tint. Cream, blue or grey behind the questions, if white paper glares.
- Reading ruler. Dims everything but the line you’re reading.
- Clearer typeface. Atkinson Hyperlegible, designed for readability, with more space between lines and letters.
Calmer to use
- Short sessions. A drill is eight questions, about ten minutes, and you can stop any time.
- Breaks. After 25 minutes the app suggests a break, and after 11pm it suggests sleep.
- Calm motion. Turn it on and nothing on screen moves: marks, cards and progress bars are simply there. The app also follows your phone’s reduce-motion setting, and so does this website.
- Quiet by default. Sound and vibration are off until you turn them on.
Ceist Eile is independent and not connected to the SEC. For the exam itself, your school applies for accommodations on your behalf. The SEC’s RACE page has the details.
