Why can a mudflow travel so fast?
- The ground is frozen solid all year
- The soil is dry and baked hard
- The soil is saturated with water
Show the answer
The soil is saturated with water
When soil is saturated, water fills the gaps between particles and it loses its grip, so it flows downhill quickly. Heavy rain, snowmelt or eruptions can trigger mudflows.
