Why does granite in the Wicklow Mountains have large crystals?
- Lava cooled very fast at the surface
- Layers of mud were pressed together
- Magma cooled slowly deep underground
Show the answer
Magma cooled slowly deep underground
Slow cooling deep in the crust gives crystals time to grow, so granite has large crystals of quartz, feldspar and mica. Basalt cooled fast at the surface, so its crystals are tiny.
