The 6 counts quavers, not beats. They fall into two groups of three, so you feel two dotted-crotchet beats per bar. Answering 6 is the classic trap.

Three notes played in the time of two

A triplet squeezes three equal notes into the time normally taken by two of the same kind, e.g. three quavers in one crotchet beat. It is marked with a small 3.

In compound time each beat is a dotted note that divides into three quavers: 6/8, 9/8 and 12/8. In simple time (2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 2/2) each beat divides into two.
