Plane figures & constructions, 3 marks

How do you erect a perpendicular at point P on a line?

  1. Draw a line from P at 60 degrees to the line
  2. Join P to the far end of the line, then bisect
  3. Mark equal distances either side of P, then bisect
Show the answer

Mark equal distances either side of P, then bisect

Mark two points equally spaced from P and draw equal arcs from each. The arcs cross on the line through P at 90 degrees.

How is a 60 degree angle constructed with compasses at point P on a line?

  1. Bisect a straight line twice, then join to P
  2. Arc from P; step the same radius from where it cuts
  3. Bisect a right angle drawn at P with compasses
Show the answer

Arc from P; step the same radius from where it cuts

The two radii and the stepped chord are equal, forming an equilateral triangle, and its angles are all 60 degrees.
