Design & Communication Graphics (DCG), Higher Level(8 marks)

Three quick ones from the Design & Communication Graphics topics that come up most.

(a)Why can't the dihedral angle be read in the view that shows the line of intersection in true length?
  1. The line is foreshortened there
  2. The planes do not appear as edges there
  3. The heights come from the wrong view
(b)In the axes method, how are the axonometric axes X, Y and Z related to the triangle abc?
  1. They are its angle bisectors
  2. They are its sides
  3. They are its altitudes
(c)Where do the HT and VT of an oblique plane meet?
  1. On the XY line
  2. Anywhere, depending on the plane
  3. On the X1Y1 line
Show the answers

(a) The planes do not appear as edges there

(b) They are its altitudes

(c) On the XY line

Intersecting planes & dihedrals, 3 marks

An oblique plane is cut by a vertical plane. Where does the plan of their line of intersection lie?

  1. Parallel to the oblique plane's HT
  2. Square to XY
  3. Along the vertical plane's HT
Show the answer

Along the vertical plane's HT

A vertical plane shows as a single line (its HT) in plan, so everything in it, including the line of intersection, has its plan on that line. The elevation is then projected.

True length & angles of lines, 3 marks

A line is 100 mm long and its plan is 60 mm long. How far apart in height are its ends?

  1. ≈116.6 mm
  2. 80 mm
  3. 40 mm
Show the answer

80 mm

True length, plan length and height difference form a right-angled triangle with the true length as hypotenuse: √(100² − 60²) = √6400 = 80 mm.

Oblique planes & traces, 3 marks

A line is perpendicular to an oblique plane. How is its plan drawn relative to the plane's HT?

  1. Perpendicular to the HT
  2. Parallel to the HT
  3. Parallel to XY
Show the answer

Perpendicular to the HT

The HT is a horizontal line in the plane, so it is at 90° to the normal, and a right angle with a horizontal arm shows true in plan. Likewise the elevation is square to the VT.

Orthographic & auxiliary views, 3 marks

A block is 90 mm long, 40 mm deep and 60 mm high. What size is its end view?

  1. 90 mm wide and 60 mm high
  2. 90 mm wide and 40 mm high
  3. 40 mm wide and 60 mm high
Show the answer

40 mm wide and 60 mm high

An end view shows depth across and height up. The length points towards you in that view, so it cannot be seen: 40 by 60.

Perspective drawing, 3 marks

A box has edges at 90 degrees in plan. What angle is between the lines from S to its two vanishing points?

  1. 45 degrees
  2. 90 degrees
  3. 180 degrees
Show the answer

90 degrees

The lines from S are drawn parallel to the two sets of edges. The edges meet at 90 degrees, so the two lines from S do too.

Interpenetration of solids, 3 marks

A cylinder and a cone share the same vertical axis. What shape is their line of interpenetration?

  1. A horizontal circle
  2. A sloping ellipse
  3. A vertical parabola
Show the answer

A horizontal circle

Solids of revolution on a shared axis meet in circles at right angles to that axis. In elevation these show as straight lines.
