State Archimedes' principle.
- Pressure at a point in a fluid acts equally in all directions
- The pressure in a fluid increases with depth and with the fluid's density
- The upthrust on a body in a fluid equals the weight of the fluid it displaces
Show the answer
The upthrust on a body in a fluid equals the weight of the fluid it displaces
If the upthrust equals the body's weight the body floats. The other two statements are true of fluids, but neither is Archimedes' principle.

Density of a stone of mass 3 kg and volume 0.001 m³?
- 0.003 kg m⁻³
- 333 kg m⁻³
- 3000 kg m⁻³
Show the answer
3000 kg m⁻³
ρ = m ÷ V = 3 ÷ 0.001 = 3000 kg m⁻³. 0.003 comes from multiplying instead of dividing.

Why are tractors fitted with very wide tyres?
- To reduce the weight of the tractor on the ground
- To spread the weight over a large area and lower the pressure
- To increase the pressure the tractor puts on the ground
Show the answer
To spread the weight over a large area and lower the pressure
P = F ÷ A. A bigger area gives a smaller pressure for the same weight, so the tractor does not sink into soft ground.
Density and pressure, 2 marks
Define pressure.
- Force per unit area
- Force multiplied by area
- Mass per unit volume
Show the answer
Force per unit area
P = F ÷ A, unit the pascal (Pa), where 1 Pa = 1 N m⁻². Mass per unit volume is density.
