Effect of increasing light intensity on the rate of transpiration?
- It decreases
- No effect
- It increases
Show the answer
It increases
In brighter light the stomata open wider, so more water vapour escapes. Wind and higher temperature also increase transpiration.

Apparatus used to measure water uptake by a leafy shoot?
- Respirometer
- Potometer
- Spirometer
Show the answer
Potometer
A bubble moving along a capillary tube shows how fast the shoot takes up water, which is close to the transpiration rate.

Plant transport, 2 marks
The loss of water vapour from the leaves of a plant is called?
- Translocation
- Respiration
- Transpiration
Show the answer
Transpiration
Water evaporates from the leaves and escapes through the stomata. This pull drags more water up the xylem.
Plant transport, 2 marks
Which cells take in water from the soil?
- Palisade cells
- Root hair cells
- Guard cells
Show the answer
Root hair cells
The root hair is long and thin, which gives a huge surface area for absorbing water and minerals.
Plant transport, 2 marks
By which process does water enter a root hair cell?
- Osmosis
- Active transport
- Transpiration
Show the answer
Osmosis
The soil water is more dilute than the cell sap, so water moves in by osmosis across the selectively permeable membrane.
