How should a flammable liquid like ethanol be heated?

  1. Directly over a Bunsen flame, stirring well
  2. In a sealed flask with a stopper to trap vapour
  3. In a water bath, with no naked flames nearby
Show the answer

In a water bath, with no naked flames nearby

Ethanol vapour catches fire easily. A water bath warmed by an electric heater or kettle water heats it gently with no flame.

How should leftover organic solvent such as cyclohexane be disposed of?

  1. Into the ordinary bin
  2. Into a labelled waste solvent container
  3. Down the sink with plenty of water
Show the answer

Into a labelled waste solvent container

Organic solvents are flammable and harm water life, so they are collected for safe disposal. Neutralised dilute acids and bases may go down the sink.
