A groove is cut across one piece and the end of the shelf fits into it. The shelf sits on the housing, which gives it good support.

Bowls and plates

In faceplate turning the wood is screwed to a disc on the headstock only, so its face can be hollowed. Long parts like legs are turned between centres.

Decking oil

Oil soaks into the wood and does not form a film that can peel. It repels water and can simply be reapplied each year.
