A 1 kΩ resistor has a tolerance of ±5%. Its actual value lies between:

  1. 995 Ω and 1005 Ω
  2. 500 Ω and 1500 Ω
  3. 950 Ω and 1050 Ω

5% of 1000 Ω = 50 Ω, so the value is from 1000 - 50 = 950 Ω up to 1000 + 50 = 1050 Ω. A gold band means ±5%, silver ±10%.

A 15-tooth driver at 900 rpm meshes with a 45-tooth driven gear. What is the output speed?

  1. 60 rpm
  2. 300 rpm

Output = input x driver teeth / driven teeth = 900 x 15 / 45 = 300 rpm. A bigger driven gear turns more slowly but with more torque.

A part 200 mm long is drawn to a scale of 1:4. How long is it on the drawing?

A scale of 1:4 means 1 mm on paper stands for 4 mm in reality, so 200 / 4 = 50 mm. Scales such as 2:1 enlarge small parts instead.
