Electrolysis & Faraday's laws, 2 marks
Electrolysis is?
- Using a chemical reaction to make an electric current flow
- Splitting a nucleus by firing slow neutrons at it
- Using an electric current to cause a chemical reaction
Show the answer
Using an electric current to cause a chemical reaction
Current passes through a molten or dissolved ionic compound. A reaction that makes a current is an electrochemical cell, the reverse process.

At which electrode does oxidation happen in electrolysis?
- Both equally
- Anode
- Cathode
Show the answer
Anode
Negative ions go to the positive anode and lose electrons there (oxidation). Reduction always happens at the cathode.

Electrolysis of acidified water: ratio of hydrogen volume to oxygen volume?
- 2 to 1
- 1 to 1
- 1 to 2
Show the answer
2 to 1
Water is H2O, with twice as many H as O atoms, so twice as much hydrogen gas forms. In a Hofmann voltameter the H2 collects at the cathode.
