More Volumetric analysis questions

Volumetric analysis, 2 marks

A standard solution is one of?

  1. pH exactly 7 at room temperature
  2. Tap water with any dissolved solute
  3. Accurately known concentration
Show the answer

Accurately known concentration

It is made by dissolving an exact mass of a pure solid (e.g. anhydrous Na2CO3) in deionised water in a volumetric flask, then inverting to mix.

Volumetric analysis, 2 marks

The burette will hold hydrochloric acid. What is it rinsed with last, before filling?

  1. The base solution
  2. The hydrochloric acid
  3. Deionised water
Show the answer

The hydrochloric acid

Water left inside would dilute the acid. The pipette is rinsed with the solution it measures; only the conical flask is rinsed with deionised water.

Volumetric analysis, 2 marks

Why is a white tile placed under the conical flask during a titration?

  1. To see the colour change clearly
  2. To keep the flask and its contents cool
  3. To speed up the reaction in the flask
Show the answer

To see the colour change clearly

The end point is shown by a single drop changing the indicator colour. A white background makes that change easy to spot.
