Why is a centre punch used before drilling a hole in metal?

  1. To harden the metal around the hole
  2. To mark the line for the hacksaw
  3. So the drill bit does not wander
Show the answer

So the drill bit does not wander

A centre punch makes a small dent at the centre of the hole. The drill point sits in the dent and starts exactly there instead of skating across the smooth metal.
