Ferrous metals are metals that contain?
- Copper
- Zinc
- Iron
Show the answer
Iron
Ferrous comes from the Latin word for iron. Mild steel and cast iron are ferrous and most rust. Aluminium, copper and brass contain no iron, so they are non-ferrous.

Why is aluminium often chosen for small metal brackets on a model?
- Brittle, so it snaps cleanly
- Light, rust-free and easy to shape
- Heavy, magnetic and very hard
Show the answer
Light, rust-free and easy to shape
Aluminium is about a third of the weight of steel, does not rust and is easy to cut, bend and drill. It is not magnetic and it bends rather than snapping.
