Gears, pulleys & chain drives, 3 marks

A 12-tooth driver gear turns a 36-tooth driven gear. The driver turns at 90 rpm. Output speed?

  1. 270 rpm
  2. 45 rpm
  3. 30 rpm
Show the answer

30 rpm

Output = input × driver teeth ÷ driven teeth = 90 × 12 ÷ 36 = 30 rpm. The bigger driven gear turns more slowly: 3 turns of the driver for each of its turns.

Rotary-to-linear mechanisms, 3 marks

A 15-tooth pinion turns at 10 rpm on a rack with a 3 mm pitch. How far does the rack move in one minute?

  1. 150 mm
  2. 450 mm
  3. 45 mm
Show the answer

450 mm

Per turn: 15 × 3 = 45 mm. In one minute the pinion makes 10 turns: 45 × 10 = 450 mm. 45 mm is only one turn's worth.

Developments & marking out, 3 marks

A development for a bent acrylic bracket must show the outline and?

  1. Bend lines and hole positions
  2. Shading to show it is solid
  3. The name of the glue for each joint
Show the answer

Bend lines and hole positions

The flat pattern is marked out and cut before bending, so it needs every bend line and the centre of each hole. Holes are easier to drill while the sheet is still flat.
