True length & indexing, 3 marks

A right square pyramid has base edges parallel to X–Y. Are its sloping edges true length in elevation?

  1. Yes, all four are true length
  2. Only the front two are
  3. No, all four look shorter
Show the answer

No, all four look shorter

In plan each sloping edge runs diagonally, at 45° to X–Y, so none is parallel to the vertical plane. Rotate one until its plan is parallel to X–Y to get the true length.
