Plane in from each end towards the middle

Stopping short of the far edge, then working in from the other side, means the plane never pushes fibres off the corner. Clamping a scrap block at the far edge also works.

Jack plane

The jack plane's long sole rides over hollows, so it straightens edges. The shorter smoothing plane (about 250 mm) is used afterwards to give a fine finish.
