Try three

Working drawings, 3 marks

A drawing is marked Scale 1:2. What does this mean?

  1. The drawing is twice the real size
  2. Only half of the object is drawn
  3. The drawing is half the real size
Show the answer

The drawing is half the real size

At 1:2, 1 mm on the drawing stands for 2 mm on the real object, so the drawing is half size. 1:1 is full size and 2:1 is twice full size. Dimensions always give real sizes.

Seasoning & wood defects, 3 marks

A sample weighs 150 g when wet and 120 g when fully dried. What is its moisture content?

  1. 30%
  2. 25%
  3. 20%
Show the answer

25%

MC = (wet mass - dry mass) / dry mass x 100 = (150 - 120) / 120 x 100 = 30 / 120 x 100 = 25%. Always divide by the dry mass, not the wet mass.

Hardwoods & softwoods, 3 marks

Balsa is very light and soft, yet it is classed as a hardwood. Why?

  1. It comes from a broadleaved tree
  2. It is harder than softwoods
  3. Its seeds are found in cones
Show the answer

It comes from a broadleaved tree

Hardwood and softwood are botanical groups, not measures of hardness. Balsa is a broadleaved tree with seeds in fruit, so it is a hardwood even though it is softer than pine.
