Welding

Permanent joints cannot be taken apart without damage, e.g. welding, riveting, soldering and gluing. Nuts, bolts, screws and KD fittings are semi-permanent.

Which adhesive is best for gluing two pieces of wood in a school project?

PVA

PVA (white wood glue) soaks into the wood fibres and gives a strong joint once clamped and dried. Solvent cement is for acrylic, and solder is for electrical joints.

Why are knock-down (KD) fittings used in flat-pack furniture?

  1. The furniture is easy to assemble and take apart
  2. They make a permanent, waterproof joint
  3. They melt the parts together with heat

KD fittings like cam locks and dowels let buyers put furniture together at home with simple tools, and flat packs are cheaper to store and transport.
