More Linear & simultaneous equations questions

Linear & simultaneous equations, 2 marks

Solve 3x − 4 = 11.

  1. x = 15
  2. x = 7/3
  3. x = 5
Show the answer

x = 5

Add 4 to both sides: 3x = 15. Divide both sides by 3: x = 5. Check: 3(5) − 4 = 11.

Linear & simultaneous equations, 3 marks

Solve the simultaneous equations x + y = 10 and x − y = 4.

  1. x = 6, y = 4
  2. x = 7, y = 3
  3. x = 3, y = 7
Show the answer

x = 7, y = 3

Add the two equations: 2x = 14, so x = 7. Then 7 + y = 10 gives y = 3. Check in the other one: 7 − 3 = 4.

Linear & simultaneous equations, 3 marks

Solve 5x + 2 = 2x + 14.

  1. x = 4
  2. x = 12
  3. x = 16/3
Show the answer

x = 4

Take 2x from both sides: 3x + 2 = 14. Take 2 from both sides: 3x = 12. Divide by 3: x = 4. Check: 22 = 22.
