- A charge of €4 per km
- A fixed €4 charge
- 20 litres per minute
- 6.7 litres per minute
- 26.7 litres per minute

(a) The person was stopped
(b) A fixed €4 charge
(c) 20 litres per minute

A cylindrical glass is filled from a tap at a steady rate. The graph of water depth against time is…
- a curve getting steeper
- a curve getting flatter
- a straight line
Show the answer
a straight line
The glass is the same width all the way up, so the depth rises by the same amount every second. A constant rate of change gives a straight line.

A graph shows a phone plan's monthly cost against minutes used. The fixed fee rises by €3. The new graph is the old one…
- made 3 times steeper
- moved up by 3
- moved right by 3
Show the answer
moved up by 3
Every cost goes up by €3 whatever the minutes, so each point moves up 3. The cost per minute (the slope) is unchanged, so the old and new lines are parallel.

On a distance–time graph, what does a horizontal section mean?
- It is moving at a steady speed
- It is speeding up
- The object is stopped
Show the answer
The object is stopped
Horizontal means time passes but the distance does not change, so the object is not moving. A straight sloping line means a steady speed.

A distance–time graph is a straight line from (0 h, 0 km) to (3 h, 180 km). What is the speed?
- 180 km/h
- 60 km/h
- 540 km/h
Show the answer
60 km/h
The slope of a distance–time graph is the speed: 180 km ÷ 3 h = 60 km/h.

A taxi fare graph meets the fare axis at €4 and rises €2 per km. What does the €4 show?
- The fixed starting charge
- The cost of each km
- The total fare for a 4 km trip
Show the answer
The fixed starting charge
The y-intercept is the value when x = 0. At 0 km the fare is already €4, so €4 is the fixed charge you pay before any distance.
