A ∩ B includes the centre region, the elements in all three sets. Remove it: 8 − 3 = 5 elements are in A and B but not in C.

€1 = US$1.15. How many euro do you get for $460?

Going from dollars to euro, divide by the rate: 460 ÷ 1.15 = €400. Multiplying (460 × 1.15 = 529) converts the wrong way.

Trigonometry, 3 marks

20 m from a building, the angle of elevation to the bottom of a flagpole on its roof is 30° and to the top 40°. Pole height (1 d.p.)?

Top: 20 tan 40° = 16.78 m. Bottom: 20 tan 30° = 11.55 m. Pole = 16.78 − 11.55 = 5.2 m. Subtract the heights, not the angles (20 tan 10° is wrong).

Real-life graphs, 3 marks

A 600-litre tank empties at a steady rate in 30 minutes. What is the slope of its volume–time graph?

Slope = change in volume ÷ time = (0 − 600) ÷ 30 = −20. The volume goes DOWN by 20 litres every minute, so the slope is negative.
