Trigonometry, 2 marks
In a right-angled triangle, sin A = ?
- Adjacent ÷ hypotenuse
- Opposite ÷ adjacent
- Opposite ÷ hypotenuse
Show the answer
Opposite ÷ hypotenuse
SOH CAH TOA: Sin = Opposite over Hypotenuse. Cos = Adjacent over Hypotenuse. Tan = Opposite over Adjacent.
Trigonometry, 3 marks
A right-angled triangle has hypotenuse 10 m. Find the side opposite the 30° angle.
- 20 m
- 5 m
- 8.66 m
Show the answer
5 m
Opposite and hypotenuse means sin: opposite = 10 × sin 30° = 10 × 0.5 = 5 m. Using cos gives 8.66, the adjacent side.
Trigonometry, 2 marks
In a right-angled triangle, opposite = 3 and adjacent = 4. Which ratio equals 3/4?
- tan A
- sin A
- cos A
Show the answer
tan A
tan A = opposite ÷ adjacent = 3/4. With a hypotenuse of 5, sin A would be 3/5 and cos A would be 4/5.
