Quick ones on Analysing data & graphs.

(a)Time and temperature are both continuous measurements. Which graph suits them best?
  1. Bar chart
  2. Line graph
  3. Tally chart
(b)Results in separate categories, such as eye colour in a class, are best shown on a?
  1. Heating curve
  2. Line graph
  3. Bar chart
(c)When plotting a graph, the independent variable usually goes on which axis?
  1. The x-axis (horizontal)
  2. Either one, it never matters
  3. The y-axis (vertical)

Each axis label on a graph should give the quantity and its?

  1. Colour
  2. Average
  3. Unit
Show the answer

Unit

Axes are labelled like Time (s) or Mass (g). Without the unit, a reader cannot tell whether 5 means 5 seconds or 5 minutes. Units often carry marks.

Hypothesis: heavier balls fall faster. Result: all the balls hit the ground together. What follows?

  1. The hypothesis is proven true
  2. The data does not support it
  3. The data supports it
Show the answer

The data does not support it

If heavier balls fell faster they would land first. They did not, so the result goes against the hypothesis. Data can support a hypothesis or not support it.

A straight-line graph shows 10 g of a solid dissolves at 20 °C and 20 g at 40 °C. Estimate the mass at 30 °C.

  1. 15 g
  2. 25 g
  3. 30 g
Show the answer

15 g

30 °C is halfway between 20 °C and 40 °C, so on a straight line the mass is halfway between 10 g and 20 g: 15 g. Reading between plotted points is called interpolation.
