In an energy profile diagram for an exothermic reaction, where are the products?

  1. Higher than the reactants
  2. At the same level
  3. Lower than the reactants
Show the answer

Lower than the reactants

In an exothermic reaction energy is released to the surroundings, so the products end up with less energy than the reactants and are drawn lower on the diagram.

During a reaction in a beaker the thermometer reading falls. What type of reaction is it?

  1. Combustion reaction
  2. Endothermic
  3. Exothermic
Show the answer

Endothermic

An endothermic reaction takes in heat energy from its surroundings, including the water and the thermometer, so the temperature drops. Exothermic reactions make it rise.
