How is a plastic dip coating put on a steel tool handle?

  1. Brush cold liquid plastic on by hand
  2. Spray it with zinc, then heat it in oil
  3. Heat the metal and dip it in plastic powder
Show the answer

Heat the metal and dip it in plastic powder

The hot steel is dipped in a fluidised bed of plastic powder, which melts onto it and flows into a smooth coat. It gives grip, insulation and rust protection.

Why is steel garden furniture usually powder coated?

  1. To help it conduct electricity
  2. To stop rust and give a tough colour
  3. To make it softer and easier to bend
Show the answer

To stop rust and give a tough colour

Charged paint powder is sprayed on and baked in an oven into a hard, even skin. It keeps air and water off the steel, stopping rust, and comes in many colours.
