How often Hand tools, cutting & bending comes up on the Engineering papers, every year it was asked, and questions to try.
CL Asked on 3 of the last 5 Common Level papers, most recently in 2026. most years
Quick ones on Hand tools, cutting & bending.
- Teeth pointing back, towards the handle
- Teeth pointing forward, away from the handle
- Either way, as long as it is loose
- The handle stops the teeth clogging
- It makes the file cut twice as fast on steel
- The pointed tang could stab your hand
- Draw filing
- Centre punching
- Cross filing

How is a strip of mild steel bent to a sharp 90 degree angle in the school workshop?
- Warm it on a strip heater and fold it by hand
- Drill a row of holes and snap it along them
- Hold it in a vice at the line and hammer it
Show the answer
Hold it in a vice at the line and hammer it
Mild steel is ductile, so a cold strip can be held in a vice, often between bending bars, and hammered over. A strip heater is for thermoplastics like acrylic, not for steel.
